Whitney Elizabeth Houston is a singer that was born in Newark, New Jersey on the 9th of August 1963. Their parents include gospel stars Cissy Houston(n e Emily Lee Drinkard), and John Russell Houston Jr. Whitney's cousin Dionne warwick also sings. As a young girl, Houston began singing professionally in her church's choir. Houston sang the backing vocals for Chaka Khosns 1978 single Im Every Woman with her mother. The singer went on to sing backing vocals for Jermaine and Lou Rawls as well as her mother, and also worked briefly as models on the cover of Seventeen magazine in the year 1981. In 1981, she began singing in the New York funk group Material. The band's quality vocal performance in this band that attracted the attention of record label such as Arista.
